Unlocking insights in South Africa

The SASTI Knowledge Platform is a digital facility that houses statistical and bibliometric indicators, searchable databases, information on the key research institutions in the South African science, technology and innovation landscape The platform brings together a wide range of resources to provide both a comprehensive overview as well as detailed understanding of the history, institutions, policies and strategies, key actors and performance of the South African STI system.

The platform consists of two components: the Observatory and the Database Portal and Information Centre.

SASTI Observatory

The Observatory is a scientometric observatory that provides relevant and up to date information and data on the key indicators that are required to monitor and evaluate the state and performance of the South African Science, Technology, and Innovation system.

The subsections of the Observatory consist of standard bibliometric indicators, indicators of human resources for S&T, patent indicators and indicators of investment in R&D.

Database Portal and Information Centre

The Data Portal and Information Centre contains the following:

  1. Databases developed and maintained by CREST (AfrED, SATD, etc.) which can be searched online
  2. Links to statistical databases about the South African STI system housed elsewhere
  3. A wide range of information resources on the South African STI system including a web interface to search the CREST Library

Register for SASTI today

Access to the Platform is open and free. However, to download tables, graphs and reports from the platform, you need to register an account. Once registered we will also keep you informed about new information, data, and other functionalities as these are added to the Platform. You will also be able to engage with us about other content you would like to see on the Platform.
