Comment

One of the research questions that the AfrED project wants to address is where ‘evaluation’ academics and scholars publish. More specifically we are keen to find out whether articles that are published by African authors appear in what could be termed ‘core evaluation’ or ‘non-core ’ journals. We define a ‘core evaluation’ journal as any of the mainstream journals that are dedicated to the field of (programme) evaluation studies. These would typically refer to journals such as American Evaluation, Evaluation and Program Planning, the African Evaluation Journal, New directions for evaluation and the like. “Non core’ journals are journals in any field (predominantly in the health sciences, agriculture and social sciences) which are dedicated to their fields or disciplines but also publish evaluation articles. We believe that this distinction is an important one as one would expect that an increase in article in the ‘core evaluatin journals’ over time is an indicator of the greater institutionalisation of evaluation studies in a country or continent as well as the growing professionalisation of people working in the field. The results of this analysis, as demonstrated in the graph above, shows that there is indeed some evidence of such a trend.
