STI Funding for and in Africa

This website is devoted to making the flows of research, science, technology and innovation funding to and within Africa more visible. The statistics and trends in funding flows presented here are based on the ongoing curation of grants from across the world and from the African continent that fund and support the widest range of research and STI activities. The website is managed by the data science team at CREST in collaboration with funders and other experts working in this domain. The project that underpinned the development of the first version of the grants database and this dashboard was provided by the IDRC as part of the SGCI-initiative in 2023. The relationship with the SGCI remains crucial and is reflected in the dashboard where searches can be conducted on all African countries or – if required – filtered by the SGCI countries. Our aim is to maintain and further develop an open-access database that maps the flows of foreign ('inbound') and domestic funding to Africa as part of our larger vision to raise the visibility of African science. The current coverage – which begins with grants awarded since 2000 – will be expanded to include more foreign funders, but in due course also all funders (funding agencies, governments, foundations, private sector) that provide funding scientific research, technology and innovation across the African continent.

STI Funding in Africa

Funding Flow

This website examines the diverse flows of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) funding to Africa, analyzing how resources are directed from various funding organizations to specific targets such as recipient countries, institutions, and fields of research. The funding flows are defined by the number of grants received and the total grant value received in USD. The following funding flows are identified and presented in this website:

  • STI Funding Flow from Country to Country
  • STI Funding from Organization to Country
  • STI Funding Flow from Organization to Organization
  • STI Funding Flow from Organization to Fields of Research
  • STI Funding Flow from Organization to Country to Fields of Research
  • STI Funding Flow from Organization to Country to Research Topics

Funder Dashboard

Overview of the Funder Dashboard

The Funder Dashboard provides an interactive overview of STI funding flowing to Africa disaggregated by funding organizations. It offers several statistics, allowing users to quickly learn more about STI funding from a particular funding organization of interest. The core functionality centers on key metrics like the Total Funding allocated, the number of funded locations, and the Number of funded organizations, giving a clear picture of the scale of operation. In addition, the dashboard visualizes the distribution of funding by main scientific fields. It further enhances strategic analysis by disaggregating funding according to the recipient type (e.g., Universities, Non-Profits). This detailed functionality transforms raw data into actionable intelligence, enabling stakeholders to benchmark funder activity, identify investment trends, and align their own efforts with the broader financial currents in the research ecosystem.

Country Dashboard

Overview of the Country Dashboard

The Funded Country Dashboard provides an essential overview of STI funding within a specific nation or location (region). Its core functionality is designed to offer a transparent assessment of the country's funding of research ecosystem from a multi-angle perspective. Key statistics highlight the scale of engagement, including the total number of funding organizations disbursing funding in the country and the total number of funded organizations. The dashboard breaks down the origins of funding by funder type (e.g., Governmental, Grant-Making Foundation). Furthermore, it offers strategic insights into the focus areas by detailing funding by scientific fields. This tool is hoped to assist policymakers, research institutions, and international collaborators, providing the necessary data to identify funding gaps, track sector growth, and strategically leverage international partnerships to advance national research priorities.

Data Portal

Searchable STI Funding Database

The Data Portal provides a comprehensive and searchable interface to the project's underlying database. Users can explore granular project information and filter records by funder, location, year, field of research, and more. This tool is intended for deep dives into specific grants and allows for the export of filtered results for further analysis.

Methodology

Methodology Overview

The creation of the underlying funding database relies on a rigorous, multi-step scientific methodology to ensure data quality and analytical accuracy. The process begins with identifying key funders and data collection from diverse sources. This raw, heterogeneous data then undergoes intensive data preprocessing. Grants are filtered to distinguish Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) grants from general development or humanitarian grants using keywords, funder mission statements, and project descriptions. A critical step is the organization disambiguation of both funder and recipient names to correctly map name variants to a single entity. Field Classification is carried out to categorize grants by scientific discipline. An organization typology is developed and each funder / recipient is assigned a type to enable the detailed statistical breakdowns presented in the dashboards.
